El presente documento resume la posición de los autores respecto a la función de los ingenieros y el de las Facultades de Ingeniería en el marco de la internacionalización de la economía y su nivel de competitividad. Se presenta una descripción de las principales tendencias que están dando lugar a cambios en productos, servicios, y en las organizaciones. Se resalta el papel que tiene la ingeniería en el incremento del valor agregado a la producción y, por lo tanto, su función estratégica en el crecimiento económico de una sociedad. Finalmente se proponen los elementos básicos para el desarrollo de una estrategia nacional en la ingeniería, haciendo énfasis en la importancia de la investigación y con ella del diseño para poder generar un tipo de profesional que pueda realmente incidir en la generación de conocimientos propios.
