This article reports the first part of a larger research project designed to investigate functions of language instructors’ oral behaviors in the development of English as a foreign language lessons. We investigated the processes of teaching and learning as they occurred in our language classrooms, with the aim of identifying how teacher talk is distributed in 15 foreign language classrooms. The database comprises transcripts of over 16 hours of interaction recorded during 15 lessons in 15 general EFL classrooms at the post-secondary level. The functions of teacher talk are analyzed by gathering data using the FLint system instrument adapted from Moskowitz (1971). Findings reveal that teachers do most of the talking and the most frequent categories are giving information, asking questions, and giving directions.

Este artículo reporta la primera parte de un proyecto de investigación diseñado para indagar las funciones de las conductas orales de los docentes en el desarrollo de las lecciones de inglés como lengua extranjera. Investigamos los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje tal como ocurrieron en las aulas observadas, con el objetivo de identificar cómo se distribuye el discurso docente en 15 clases de lengua extranjera. Los datos incluyen transcripciones de más de 16 horas de interacción, grabadas durante 15 lecciones en 15 aulas de educación postsecundaria. Las funciones del discurso docente se analizan mediante la recolección de datos con el instrumento FLint, adaptado de Moskowitz (1971). Los hallazgos revelan que los docentes son quienes más hablan y que las categorías más frecuentes son dar información, hacer preguntas y dar instrucciones.
