Se revisan los fundamentos de la práctica de la broncoscopía en niños, su técnica y sus indicaciones. Con base a un protocolo de estudio, se presenta la experiencia obtenida con 112 pacientes a quienes se practicaron 130 broncoscopías, en el Hospital Universitario Pediátrico de La Misericordia, en el lapso comprendido, entre Octubre de 1983 y Septiembre de 1985. Los niños estudiados fueron de todas las edades pediátricas. Las indicaciones para realizar la broncoscopía, fueron principalmente, el estudio de neuropatías crónicas, la precisión de diagnostico de TBC., el tratamiento de atelectasias persistentes, la determinación bacteriológica en infecciones respiratorias complicadas de difícil manejo y la extracción de cuerpos extraños.

La broncoscopía es un procedimiento seguro y de gran utilidad y aplicabilidad en pacientes pediátricos, que no solo permite ampliar el conocimiento de las condiciones de la vía aérea en situaciones de enfermedad y permite un diagnóstico certero, sino que además es un método terapéutico de gran aplicación en la patología respiratoria del niño.
