This article attempts to develop an interpretation of Spinoza's thesis known as the Doctrine of Parallelism, set forth in proposition 7 of the second book of the Ethics. According to this interpretation Spinoza bases this thesis on the Cartesian distinction between formal essences and objective essences, although he uses it in a fundamentally new way. To show this, it is necessary to examine the way in which Spinoza, throughout the first seven propositions of the second book, constructs the doctrine step by step. This examination will also serve to explain the nature of adequate and inadequate ideas.
