En este trabajo se presenta una estrategia práctica para el diseño de un nuevo sistema catalítico. Los componentes del catalizador que consta de un óxido metálico (circonio) y un compuesto de ion sulfato, son determinados a partir de modelos de actividad. Estos modelos incluyen aproximaciones en cuanto a actividad, química superficial, consideraciones geométricas y modelos de generación de acidez. La búsqueda de relaciones causa-efecto entre actividades catalíticas y propiedades estructurales, o entre las variables de preparación y características de un catalizador determinado, lleva a la utilización de un modelo que es extrapolado y comprobado según los datos de la literatura abierta. Se especifican y discuten las diferentes aproximaciones para la determinación de los posibles componentes o especies activas de catalizador.
