Las unidades de transformación multifuncional se han convertido, en años recientes, en un nuevo paradigma dentro de la Ingeniería Química. Aplicando el principio fundamental de remoción selectiva de productos, estas técnicas han permitido obtener beneficios extraordinarios en cuanto a conversión de reactantes, calidad de productos, ahorros de energía y disminución del impacto ambiental causado por algunos procesos. En el presente documento se efectúa una breve discusión de los principios que fundamentan algunos de tales procesos de transformación y se ilustran, igualmente, algunas aplicaciones actuales y futuras.
