La complejidad creciente que plantean los diferentes problemas de ingeniería, refleja la evolución de nuestra sociedad; porque el tamaño de los proyectos hace, que efectos que eran despreciables tengan una alta significación e impacto en la actualidad. Para afrontar este tipo de retos se requieren entonces,  aproximaciones diferentes que trascienden el objeto de una sola especialidad e implican la colaboración interdisciplinaria de diferentes profesiones. Para lograr resultados satisfactorios no basta un trabajo multidisciplinario; se requiere, fundir los enfoques de todas las especialidades y profesiones necesarias y obtener un resultado único. Ahora bien, hay un problema de fondo para seguir esta metodología y es, la poca o ninguna formación que se imparte al profesional para este tipo de trabajo en sus años en la Universidad.
