When referring to the future of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia’s Faculty of Engineering, currently celebrating its 150th birthday, from an institutional approach, such mention cannot be separated from considerations about the future of the professions and disciplines forming its raison d'être, given that the institutionality, organisation, the system's structure, its parts and relationships, forming part of the organisational culture which it has constructed as hundreds of valuable male and female engineers have passed throughout, are not ends in themselves, but rather instruments at the service of its institutional mission. This document focuses on what is purported to be its mission so as to speculate on what type of organisation must be established to ensure that its work becomes more effective. However, circumstances may arise in which institutional dynamics acquire such vigour that they become self-feeding, reproduce themselves and become self-constructed beyond the logic and rationality which provided their origin, even coming to hinder, or at least delay, how the mission may take its course. A hypothesis may be advanced stating that there are flaws in its organisational culture and organisational design which if not dealt with, with the required depth and professionalism, could come to affect the very university which Colombia and the city need so much, in view of increasingly demanding largescale national challenges, though, fortunately for Colombia, ones which are also better understood.
