Although managers’ international experience and orientation stand out as crucial competencies for the international expansion of their firms, little is known about the mechanism through which they positively affect a firm’s export performance. Their positive effects remain implicit and are often taken for granted. The purpose of this study is to determine how the international experience and orientation of key SME managers influence the degree of internationalization achieved by these firms. To this end, a sample of 132 key managers from exporting SMEs was used, and a research model was designed based on the existing literature on international entrepreneurship. For the analysis, complex and rigorous covariance-based structural equation modeling techniques were applied to test the model’s hypotheses. The results show that the international experience and orientation of key managers have only an indirect effect on a firm’s degree of internationalization. Furthermore, key managers’ perception of risk regarding export ventures is the crucial factor explaining variation in the degree of internationalization among exporting SMEs. The perceptions of key managers act as a moderating element between international experience and the degree of internationalization achieved by their firms.
