One of cell biology's fascinating topics is the regulation of water flow through mammals' plasma membranes. Water moves passively through cell membranes' lipid bilayer in response to the osmotic gradient generated by the active transport of ions or neutral solutes be they primary or secondary.

Water regulation in the brain is a fundamental process for its due functioning. It has been determined that a type of molecule known as an aquaporin is involved in the transport of water at cell membrane level. Altering the water balance plays an important role in pathological conditions such as cerebral oedema. Understanding these molecules will allow better understanding of traumatic brain injury in the near future, as well as other neurological diseases and designing treatment strategies for them.
