In this essay, I intend to show how, from cooperative interactions, with the help of the evolution of emotional mechanisms necessary for a state of sociability, selfish individuals can achieve truly altruistic behaviors. Contrary to the common conception, even among philosophers, I put forward arguments that point to the pre-existence of conceptual capacities with respect to emotional ones, the former being both necessary for any recognition of individuals (a condition for the existence of multiple cooperation interactions), and for emotional abilities. I am trying to prove that all individuals subject to natural selection need to possess some kind of conceptual capacity by which to guide their behavior, and that this capacity is not fundamentally different from the capacity to act according to mere patterns.
