En esta primera parte del artículo se presentan las variaciones típicas con la profundidad del contenido de humedad y de los movimientos verticales, que exhiben los depósitos de suelos arcillosos expuestos al aire libre, a las condiciones ambientales, y de otros que han sido cubiertos por obras de ingeniería. De acuerdo con ellos se establecen perfiles característicos del contenido de humedad, y de los esfuerzos efectivos en los suelos ubicados encima de la tabla de agua.
