In the past decade, frugal innovation has garnered significant attention from researchers due to its potential to positively impact society, promote the intelligent use of resources, and facilitate access to high-performance, low-cost products. The aim of this literature review is to enhance the understanding of the current state of research on frugal innovation and provide greater clarity and distinction regarding this concept. The analysis is supported by bibliometric coupling, which identifies four networks of authors where research on frugal innovation is clustered. The findings reveal that this remains a relatively recent research topic and is generating increasing interest among academics due to its potential for development in both emerging and developed economies. Additionally, the relevant literature has emphasized the role that this type of innovation can play in addressing global challenges. Finally, it is important to note that this work is limited to reviewing articles published in academic journals within the fields of business management and accounting, engineering, social sciences, economics, econometrics and finance, environmental science, decision sciences of Scopus database.
