This article seeks to expose the central research topics related to the study of organizations within informal economies, as well as their limitations in this field of study. To achieve this, a systematic review of the literature in journals included in the Web of Science database was conducted, since this resource allows a more complete coverage of social sciences and humanities journals, in addition to handling relevant and high-impact works on the subject. This paper presents the results of a systematic literature review through the analysis of 223 papers published between 2010 and 2022 and focused on research approaches, organizational studies issues and future implications, and the analysis of their relevance and presence in Latin America. The search revealed a growing interest in the study of organizations in informal economies in recent years, which expands the knowledge about the organizational reality in a survival context. This approach opens up new lines of research to better understand the complexity of organizations in adverse and marginalized contexts, which helps design effective policies and programs that promote socio-economic development in these environments.
