Behavioral finance has become particularly relevant in understanding decision-making processes within smaller enterprises. This research aims to conduct a systematic literature review of the behaviors and characteristics of SMEmanagers related to their business management and performance variables, both financial and non-financial. To achieve this, a review protocol is established, which includes search equations in three languages, selection of indexing databases, inclusion and exclusion criteria, quality matrices, and the information extraction process. Among the main findings, it is highlighted that personality traits have been the most addressed in the literature to explain the management and performance of SMES. However, some research has also linked behavioral biases and the characteristics of managers and owners with these variables. A significant limitation acknowledged is that only results from the four selected indexing databases were included in the search. Ultimately, this research contributes to establishing a state of the art in the literature addressing these issues within the context of SMES.
