The human being has been considered a territorial species; however, there has been little dialogue between zoologists and humanistic scientists around the concept of territory. Although the existence of territory between microorganisms and plants is recognized, it is not clear the relationship between the concept of territory in the human sciences and that applied to other living beings. This study has the purpose of identifying territorial processes in a broad variety of living forms to fully understand the concept of territory. Through a review of the literature, the fundamental elements that apply to this concept in both biological and human sciences were identified. Despite the great conceptual diversity that has been given to the concept, there are some unifying principles that allow integrating the uses of said term into different areas of knowledge such as microbiology, botany, zoology, and the humanities. In the present analysis, territorial processes were identified in a great variety of living organisms that must defend a space for their survival.
