The article studies the effects and tendencies derived from the Internal colonization process in the north of the department of Tolima, and in particular, those experienced during the foundation of the village of Líbano in the nineteenth century. The historic explanation starts with the process of granting titles to vacant lands in 1849, and ends with the official recognition of the foundation of the village by the Sovereign State of Tolima in 1886. This temporal framework allows one to high light the practices and effects of the distribution of lands, especially, the development of large estates, the settlement project headed by settlers from Antioquia, and the local conflicts that carne as a result of taking over the lands. The article offers a realistic appraisal of the circumstances around which the colonization process took place in Antioquia, a very important region given its agro-commercial specialization at both the departmental and national levels in the twentieth century.
