Se presenta un acercamiento crítico a la efectividad de la maquinaria de paz americana que buscó poner fin al conflicto entre Bolivia y Paraguay por el Chaco Boreal. Luego de exponer los ideales de buena vecindad, hemisferio occidental y unidad latinoamericana, se destacan los obstáculos con que estos tropezaron para concretarse en las diferentes fórmulas mediadores planteadas a lo largo de los años 1934 y 1935. A través de documentación diplomática, son analizados los intereses que motivaron la actuación de los gobiernos mediadores. El texto evidencia que las negociaciones en torno a la Guerra del Chaco catalizaron antiguas tensiones y se dieron en un escenario paralelo donde también midieron fuerzas los países cercanos a la región en disputa, así como buena parte de los gobiernos del continente.

The article provides a critical approach to the effectiveness of the American peace machinery aimed at putting an end to the conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay over the Chaco Boreal (Northern Chaco) region. After examining the “Good Neighbor” policy and the ideals of “Western hemisphere” and “Latin American unity”, the article goes on to highlight the obstacles they encountered in the attempt to materialize through the different mediation formulas proposed in 1934 and 1935. The interests motivating the actions of those governments acting as mediators are analyzed on the basis of diplomatic documentation. The text shows that the negotiations regarding the Chaco War catalyzed some old tensions and took place in a scenario in which the countries close to the region in dispute, as well as a good part of the governments of the continent, were able to match strengths.
