About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The online journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras is a specialized publication for the dissemination of scientific articles related to the area of foreign languages from the perspective of didactics, pedagogy, and research in language and cultures and translation, among others. The journal publishes texts written in the following languages: Spanish, German, French, English, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian and Japanese.

 

Mission

To disseminate national and international scientific production and to encourage a permanent and updated discussion on research done in the field of foreign languages.

 

Vision

The journal will stand out for its impact, the high academic quality of its articles and its leadership in electronic publications related to the study of foreign languages, will create trends and will be visible and recognized in the main national and international academic databases.

 

General Objective

Provide the academic community with a virtual, interactive and specialized space for consultation and dissemination of research and reflections in the field of foreign languages, nationally and internationally.

 

Specific Objectives

  • Provide spaces for discussion and dissemination of academic production related to foreign languages, focused on the mission and guidelines set by the journal.

 

  • Promote multilateral cooperation, exchanges with experts and other academic initiatives related to foreign languages, through participation in national and international academic networks.

 

  • Contribute to the training of teachers and students on production of academic -scientific texts.

Peer Review Process

1. Review

1.1  Evaluation by the Editorial Committee

In the preliminary evaluation, the Editorial Committee of the journal reviews compliance of the article with the editorial policies, the ethical norms and the guidelines for authors. During this evaluation, the article is entered to a plagiarism detection software (Turnitin) to verify that it does not exceed the allowed percentage of matching text, as follows:

  • 0-15%: tolerated range.
  • 16-30%: acceptable range under review of the appropriate use of citations according to the APA Manual of Reference.
  • 31-45%: requires a detailed review by the Editorial Committee regarding references and their relevance.
  • 46% or above: unacceptable under any circumstances.

This ensures the absence of plagiarism. If the article does not comply with these specifications, the results are sent to the author with an invitation to resubmit after corrections have been made. Articles complying with the specifications continue on to the next phase.

1.2   Evaluation of content by the Editorial Committee

In this phase, the Editorial Committee evaluates overall content. If the article complies with all guidelines, the editorial committee will determine if the article proceeds to the evaluation by the evaluators. If it so deems, the Editorial Committee sends the article to two peer evaluators to continue with the evaluation process. If not, the Editorial Committee will send the author its initial evaluation and invite the author to resubmit the article. [1]

 2. Evaluation Process

The peer evaluators of the journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras are academic experts in foreign languages, qualified in didactics, pedagogy, research in languages and cultures, translation, among others.

The evaluation process is double blind.

 

2.1  Initial Evaluation

In this first evaluation, the peer reviewers meticulously evaluate form, style and content of the article: title, abstract, keywords, relevance of the subject, treatment of the topic, organization, methodology, conclusion, writing, bibliography and annexes. The peer reviewers then give their conclusions. In case of a positive evaluation and another negative, the Editorial Committee assigns a third reviewer.

2.2  Notification of the result to the author

The Editorial Committee notifies the author of the opinions of the peer reviewers. If these evaluations are positive, it asks the author to take into account the recommendations and suggestions made by the evaluators and make the necessary changes in a maximum term of ten calendar days from when we send the communication. Otherwise, the article will be rejected. The editorial committee only sends to evaluators articles complying with author guidelines.   

If the article has been rejected, the Editorial Committee invites the author to resubmit the article. The author has right to resubmit the article, with the corrections and adjustments necessary for reconsideration.

 

2.3  Final evaluation

In this final evaluation, the Editorial Committee resends the revised article to the evaluator peers for review of incorporation of their recommendations and suggestions in the article and for final evaluation on the publication of the article. If the text has been satisfactorily revised, it is sent for style correction and verification of the correct use of APA norms and layout.

If the author has not taken into account the observations from the evaluators, the Editorial Committee again returns the article so that the author corrects it in a maximum term of ten days from we send the communication. If the autor does not reply, the article will be rejected.

3. Style correction

Once the article has passed the final evaluation, a style correction will be carried out, limited to making changes and improvements related to the readability and clarity of the text. In other words, only form changes will be made; as the article has already obtained the approval of the peer reviewers, modifications to the content of the article will be not be made.

The Editor will assign a language professional to be in charge of this stage. Later, the Editorial Committee will review the resulting text.

Finally, the edited text will be sent to the author along with a consent form to be signed for approval of the final version of the article.


[1] An article can be submitted no more than three times, after having made the corrections indicated in the preliminary evaluation. The author must make corrections within 5 working days.

The magazine Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras provides immediate free access to its content under the principle that making research available to the public free of charge, supporting the exchange of global knowledge.

Any use of the contents in this site should refer Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras as its original source. Permissions must be obtain for doing so.

No economic benefit can be obtain from the information, the data or the contents of Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras electronic journal.

Author ethics

In accordance with the editorial policy of the journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras, authors:

  • Must comply with the journal’s editorial norms. This includes making sure that their article does not violate copyright laws and that all authors of the article have previously agreed on the authorship attribution.
  • Cannot submit for evaluation articles that have been published or previously submitted to other media and/or simultaneously submit an article for evaluation in another publication. If their article is rejected by the Editorial Committee at any point of the evaluation process, authors can then submit it elsewhere. Authors must inform the Editorial Committee if their paper is the result of  participation at a conference or the result of a master’s or doctoral thesis.
  • Must have an ORCID.
  • Commit to make the corrections suggested by the Editorial Committee and the peer reviewers during the evaluation process. If the authors decide to ignore any corrections, they must justify their decision.
  • Commit not to withdraw their article once it is approved to start the content evaluation stage, as they have signed the declaration letter.  Failure to so must be justified given that penalties will be applied.
  • Cannot make any attempt to contact the reviewers to exert any type of influence on the results of the evaluation and/or to try to affect the Editorial Committee of the journal with the purpose of favoring the publication of the article. This is unethical conduct in light of the double blind evaluation.

Reviewer ethics

In accordance with the editorial policy of the journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras:

  • The reviewer of the article must accept the norms of confidentiality of the journal. The review process is double blind.
  • If the reviewer has a conflict of interest with the article, does not have the profile to issue an evaluation or does not have sufficient time for the evaluation, he/she must inform in a timely manner the Editorial Committee of the journal in writing.
  • The evaluation given by the reviewer must be objective, rigorous and coherent.
  • The reviewer must comply with the time period agreed upon with the Journal for the delivery of the evaluation. If he/she cannot meet this deadline, he/she must communicate in a timely manner with the Editorial Committee of the journal.
  • Our journal does not provide any financial remuneration for reviewing the articles. A certificate of contribution is awarded to the reviewers once the review process finishes.
  • The reviewer cannot share with any third parties nor use for his/her own benefit the total or partial content of the articles being reviewed. The inappropriate use of the information of the article is considered an ethical lapse.

Editor ethics

In accordance with the editorial policy of the journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras, the Editor must:

  • Be responsible for the decisions regarding the acceptance for publication of the articles.
  • Ensure the integrity and the transparency of the editorial process and assign the relevant roles at the right times.
  • Inform the Editorial Committee in case of any conflict of interests and take the necessary measures.
  • Respond promptly to the authors’ inquiries and promote an adequate editorial process.
  • Verify the absence of plagiarism in the articles through the use of  specialized software such as Turnitin.
  • Ensure the preservation of anonymity throughout the peer evaluation process double blind modality. He/she must ensure continuous rotation of the reviewers according to their expertise.

Editorial Committee ethics

In accordance with the editorial policy of the journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras, the members of the Editorial Committee:

  • Are responsible for ensuring compliance of the journal’s Editorial Policies, based on the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics - COPE (Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing)
  • Must refrain from participating in decisions where any potential conflict of interests exists, either with an article’s author or its content. The articles’ acceptance or rejection must be based exclusively on its intellectual or scientific content, regardless of the author’s ethnicity, sexual preferences, nationality, institutional affiliation or political preferences.
  • Must reject all articles containing plagiarism or self-plagiarism, according to the plagiarism check methods and guidelines mentioned in the description of the peer review process.
  • Must carry out the preliminary evaluation of all articles received. Additionally, they must ensure the compliance of all the stages of the Editorial process, from start to end.
  • Are responsible for the search and assignment of ideal professionals for the peer review process. In the same way, they must ensure the reviewers’ and authors’ anonymity throughout the evaluation process.
  • Must evaluate periodically the editorial process through improvement plans.
  • Must monitor the proposals and goals contained in the improvement plans.
  • Must monitor any inquiry regarding the articles published and, if necessary, must write and publish any necessary post-publication corrections, clarifications, erratum or retractions.

Scientific Committee ethics

In accordance with the editorial policy of the journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras, the members of the Scientific Committee:

  • Must ensure the scientific quality of the journal’s articles. To this end, the Scientific Committee will assist the Editor’s task of alternating the reviewers, by suggesting new reviewers, maintaining scientific and professional rigor.
  • Must refrain from participating in decisions where any potential conflict of interests exists, either with an article’s author or its content. The articles’ acceptance or rejection must be based exclusively on its intellectual or scientific content, regardless of the author’s ethnicity, sexual preferences, nationality, institutional affiliation or political preferences.
  • Cannot share with any third parties nor use for their own benefit the total or partial content of the articles being reviewed. The inappropriate use of the information of the article is considered an ethical lapse.

Periodicity

The online journal Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia chaged its periodicity in 2020 and now it publishes twice a year.

Journal History

Matices en Lenguas Extranjeras is an online scholarly publication from the Foreign Languages Department at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Founded in 2007, and published twice a year, it seeks to address  the need for— and its mission as— a point of reference for reflection upon foreign languages at the national and international levels, bearing in mind the broad tradition of more than fifty years in the Foreign Languages Department in this field; not only for the variety of languages taught (English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Korean and Spanish as a foreign language) but also for the different areas of interest throughout its academic community.
