En este artículo se hace una revisión teórica sobre la trayectoria teórico-metodológica de la geografía de la población. Se inicia con la discusión sobre el principal objetivo de esta subdisciplina: las variaciones territoriales en la distribución y concentración de la población, en la estructura por edades y sexo y en los eventos sociodemográficos. En segundo lugar, se analiza específicamente el aporte de los métodos cuantitativos y la relevancia de la demografía espacial. Finalmente, se reflexiona sobre el futuro de la geografía de la población, y se propone que esta necesita replantear sus objetivos, ante la evidente complejidad de las sociedades (urbanas) del siglo XXI.
This paper presents a review on the theoretical and methodological background of population geography. It begins with a discussion on the main focus of this subdiscipline: territorial variations concerning the distribution and concentration of population, the age and sex structure, and the socio-demographic events. Next, it looks specifically at the contribution of quantitative methods and the relevance of spatial demography. Lastly, it reflects upon the future of population geography, and suggests that it needs to rethink its objectives, given the obvious complexity of 21st century (urban) societies.
Este artigo apresenta uma revisão teórica sobre a trajetória teórico-metodológica da geografia da população. O texto inicia com uma discussão sobre o que tem sido o foco principal desta subdisciplina: as variações territoriais na distribuição e concentração da população, na faixa etária e sexo, e os eventos sócio-demográficos. Em segundo lugar, analisa-se especificamente a contribuição dos métodos quantitativos e a relevância da demografia espacial. Finalmente, o artigo propõe que a geografia da população precisa repensar seus objetivos, diante da evidente complexidade das sociedades (urbanas) do século XXI.
