Violence during the National Front (1958-1970): the perception of french diplomats

Based on historical documents by diplomatic sources found in París, this article analyzes the perception that French diplomats had about the violence during the National Front. Six topics are explored: the various explanations offered to understand the persistence of violence in the 1960s; the relationships between liberal s and conservatives with "birds" and outlaws; the emergence of" Independent Republics" controlled by the Communist Party; the counter-insurgency action by the United States and its relationship with the Colombian army; events of social protest that were violently repressed by governments of the National Front; and the rise and persistent presence of insurgent groups in national politics.
