Experimental evaluation of a spark-ignited engine using biogas as fuel

Different CH4 and CO2 mixtures were used as fuel in this work; they were fed into a spark-ignited engine equipped with devices allowing spark advance, gas delivery and gas consumption to be measured. Engine bench-tests revealed changes in the main operation parameters and emissions. The results showed that increasing CO2 percentage in the mixture increased the spark angle, reduced maximum power and torque and reduced exhaust emissions (by 90% in some cases) when DAMA resolution 1015/2005 was applied. The main components to be considered when an engine of this type operates with gas fuel were also recognised.
Para el desarrollo de este trabajo se utilizaron como combustibles diferentes mezclas de CH4 y CO2, las cuales se introdujeron en un motor encendido por chispa al que se le acopló un conjunto de dispositivos que permitieron el adelanto de la chispa, el suministro de gas y la medición del consumo del mismo. Se realizaron pruebas al motor en banco con el fin de conocer la variación en los principales parámetros de operación y emisiones. Los resultados muestran que al aumentar el porcentaje de CO2 en la mezcla aumenta el ángulo de adelanto de la chispa, disminuye la potencia y el torque máximo, y se pueden reducir, hasta en 90% en algunos casos, las emisiones en el escape cuando las mismas se revisan siguiendo la Resolución 1015 de 2005 expedida por el DAMA. Como otro resultado se logró reconocer los principales componentes a tener en cuenta cuando se convierte un motor de este tipo para funcionamiento con combustibles gaseosos.
