Hace dos años, cuando asumí la dirección de la revista Ingeniería e Investigación me propuse llevar a cabo varias tareas: consolidar el proceso editorial implementándolo a través de la herramienta Open Journal System (OJS), reducir el tiempo que transcurría entre el momento en que los autores sometían a evaluación un artículo y la respuesta definitiva con respecto a su publicación, y lograr que la revista fuera clasificada en el portal de internet SCImago Journal & Country Rank, que contiene indicadores de desempeño científicos de revista y de países incluidos en la base de datos Scopus® (los indicadores de la revista pueden consultarse en: http://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch.php?q=19700173003&tip=sid&clean=0).
Hoy, gracias al trabajo del equipo editorial conformado por Diego Andrés Gil Rincón y Anderson Douglas Imbachi Niño, estas metas se han cumplido. A partir del segundo semestre de 2013, los autores, evaluadores y el equipo editorial de la revista realizan todo el proceso editorial a través del OJS, lo que facilita la comunicación y el manejo de la información de la revista, permitiendo a su vez la reducción de los tiempos de respuesta. Se redujo el tiempo requerido por parte del comité editorial para definir si un artículo se incluía o no en el proceso de evaluación de pares y se implementaron estrategias de búsqueda de pares que también contribuyeron a la reducción del tiempo de evaluación. Lo anterior permitió que los autores ahora tengan una respuesta dentro de un periodo oscila entre 8 días y 6 meses, dependiendo de cuánto avance el artículo en el proceso de evaluación. En septiembre de este año la revista fue clasificada en el cuartil 3 (Q3) de SCImago. El número de citas por documento en dos años, equivalente al factor de impacto definido por Thompson Reuters, fue 0.168 en 2013.
Si bien estos resultados son positivos para la revista, significan un reto para quien asuma su dirección a partir de enero de 2015, ya que pueden mejorarse significativamente, manteniendo la clasificación Publindex en la siguiente convocatoria. Quedan, además, otros asuntos por definir, como el que se planteó en estas páginas sobre la conveniencia de publicar los artículos en inglés. Aunque este pueda haber sido ser un factor que haya incidido en la presencia de la revista en SCImago, es posible que, teniendo en cuenta el crecimiento significativo de las publicaciones de investigadores latinoamericanos, al publicar artículos en nuestra lengua podamos llegar a un inmenso público que a su vez constituya la gran mayoría de los autores y lectores de Ingeniería e Investigación.
Como en los números anteriores, los lectores encontrarán trece artículos sobre las diferentes áreas que aborda esta revista. Estos fueron sometidos a nuestro proceso de evaluación por parte de pares académicos, a quienes agradezco su inmensa y desinteresada colaboración durante estos dos años al frente de la revista. Espero que la información aquí publicada sirva para la discusión o confirmación de otros hallazgos, y que alimente los procesos de investigación y desarrollo de los lectores.

Two years ago, when I assumed the editorship of the journal Ingeniería e Investigación I set out myself to various tasks: strengthening the editorial process by implementing it through the Open Journal System (OJS) tool, reducing the time lag between the time in which the authors submitted an article to assessment and the definitive answer regarding its publication, and getting the magazine to be classified in the Internet portal SCImago journal & Country Rank, which contains indicators of scientific performance for magazines and countries included in the Scopus® database (indicators of the magazine may be consulted in: http://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch.php?q=19700173003&tip=sid&clean=0).
Today, thanks to the work of the editorial team formed by Diego Andrés Gil Rincón and Anderson Douglas Imbachi Niño, these goals have been met. Since the second half of 2013, the authors, reviewers and the editorial team of the journal have been carrying out the editorial process through the OJS, facilitating communication and information management of the magazine, while allowing us the reduction of response times. The editorial board reduced the time required to determine whether an article is to be included or not in the process of peer review, and peer search strategies were also implemented to reduce the evaluation time. This allows the authors to have an answer within a period between 8 days to 6 months, depending on how much the article advances in the evaluation process. Last September the journal was classified in quartile 3 (Q3) of SCImago. The number of citations per paper in two years, equivalent to the impact factor defined by Thompson Reuters, was 0.168 in 2013.
While these results are positive for the journal, they represent a challenge for whoever assumes its direction in January 2015, as they can be significantly improved while maintaining the Publindex classification in the following number. Moreover, as has been previously mentioned in these pages, other issues such as the desirability of publishing articles in English language remain to be defined. While this last aspect may have been a factor that has influenced the presence of this journal in SCImago, it is also possible that, given the significant growth of the publications of Latin American researchers, publishing articles in Spanish language will lead us to reach an enormous audience, which in turn constitutes the vast majority of authors and readers of Ingeniería e Investgación.
As with previous editions, here readers will find thirteen articles on the various areas addressed by this journal. These were subjected to our evaluation process by academic peers, whom I thank for their immense and generous collaboration over the last two years at the helm of the magazine. I hope that the information here published is useful to discus or confirm other findings, to feed research processes and the development readers.
