En el presente trabajo se desea indicar el importante papel que pueden cumplir las universidades en el proceso de transferencia y asimilación de tecnología foránea, así como señalar la necesidad de establecer estrechos vínculos entre el sector productivo y el sistema educativo si se busca fortalecer la infraestructura científico-técnica del país.
Con tal objetivo hemos dividido la presentación en dos temas principales que, a pesar de ser tratados separadamente, estarán ligados por numerosos puntos de contacto. La cuestión de la transferencia de tecnología, sus principales canales y su impacto en las universidades será el primero en ser desarrollado. El segundo se refiere a la situación actual y perspectivas de colaboración entre la Industria y las Instituciones de educación superior.
El argumento central que se presenta aquí es que, si bien las características e intereses de la investigación en la industria la hacen diferente de aquella adelantada en la universidad, es posible diseñar algunas actividades conjuntas que permitan una aproximación más positiva del sector productivo en la formación de los científicos e ingenieros que demanda. La conclusión general a que se llega es que las universidades cumplirán mejor su función de generadoras y difusoras de conocimientos en la medida en que los resultados de sus trabajos científicos inducen procesos de innovación tecnológica en el sector productivo.
